How to use this D&D dice roller
- Pick your dice. Tap a die to add one to the roll. Tap again to add more, and tap the − badge (or right-click / long-press) to remove one.
- Add your modifier. Use + and − for your ability modifier or proficiency bonus, such as +5 on an attack.
- Set advantage or disadvantage when your d20 roll calls for it. The roller rolls two d20s and keeps the right one.
- Roll. You get the total, every individual die, and a highlight on a natural 20 or natural 1.
If you already know the notation, type it straight into the box. Common rolls are one tap away below the tray, and the roll log keeps your last 25 rolls in this browser so you can answer when the DM asks what you rolled.
The seven dice in a D&D set
Dungeons & Dragons uses a set of seven polyhedral dice. The d20 decides whether you succeed; the smaller dice mostly decide how much damage or healing happens.

|---|---|---|---|
| d4 | 4 | 2.5 | Daggers, Magic Missile darts, Healing Word, Bless |
| d6 | 6 | 3.5 | Shortswords, Fireball, Sneak Attack, rolling stats |
| d8 | 8 | 4.5 | Longswords, rapiers, Cure Wounds, most hit dice |

Dice notation cheat sheet
D&D writes rolls as NdX: roll N dice with X sides each. Everything below works in the roller's notation box.

| 2d6+3 | Two d6, add them, add 3 | Greatsword damage with +3 Strength |
| 1d20+4 adv | Two d20s, keep the higher, add 4 | Advantage on an attack or check |
| 1d20 dis | Two d20s, keep the lower | Disadvantage |
| 2d20kh1 / 2d20kl1 | Keep highest / keep lowest one | Advantage or disadvantage, written out |
| 4d6dl1 | Four d6, drop the lowest | Rolling ability scores |
| 8d6 | Eight d6 added together | Fireball (average 28) |
| d% | Same as 1d100 | Wild Magic Surge, percentile tables |
| 1d8+1d6+3 | Mix different dice in one roll | Longsword plus Hunter's Mark |
Rolling with advantage and disadvantage
In D&D 5e, advantage means you roll two d20s and use the higher number. Disadvantage means you use the lower one. If you have both, they cancel out and you roll one d20 as normal, no matter how many sources of each you have.
Advantage is worth roughly +3 to +5 on a roll in the middle of the range, and it nearly doubles your chance of a natural 20, from 5% to 9.75%. The table shows how much it swings the odds of hitting a target number on the die.
| Need on d20 | Normal | Adv. | Disadv. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5+ | 80% | 96% | 64% |
| 10+ | 55% | 79.8% | 30.3% |
| 15+ | 30% | 51% | 9% |
| 20 (nat 20) | 5% | 9.8% | 0.3% |
How to roll stats in D&D 5e
The standard way to roll stats in 5e is 4d6 drop lowest: roll four six-sided dice, ignore the lowest and add the other three. Do that six times and you get six scores between 3 and 18, averaging about 12.2.
You then assign the scores to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma. The Roll ability scores button in the tray does all six rolls in one tap.
Other ways to generate stats
- Standard array: use 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8. No rolling, and every player starts even.
- Point buy: spend 27 points, with every score starting at 8 and capped at 15 before bonuses.
- 3d6 in order: the old-school method. Roll 3d6 for each ability in order and play what you get.
Common D&D rolls by class and weapon
| Hit die | Classes |
|---|---|
| d6 | Sorcerer, Wizard |
| d8 | Artificer, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock |
| d10 | Fighter, Paladin, Ranger |
| d12 | Barbarian |
| Weapon or spell | Damage |
|---|---|
| Dagger | 1d4 |
| Shortsword / Fire Bolt (lvl 1) | 1d6 / 1d10 |
| Longsword, Rapier, Longbow | 1d8 |
| Greataxe | 1d12 |
| Greatsword | 2d6 |
| Sneak Attack | 1d6 per 2 rogue levels, rounded up |
Hit dice set how many hit points you gain each level and how much you heal on a short rest. On a critical hit you roll all of the attack's damage dice twice, then add your modifier once. Tick Critical hit in the roller and it doubles the damage dice for you, leaving any d20 alone.
Death saving throws
When you drop to 0 hit points, you roll a d20 at the start of each turn with no modifiers. A 10 or higher is a success and anything lower is a failure. Three successes stabilize you; three failures and the character dies. A natural 20 brings you back with 1 hit point, and a natural 1 counts as two failures. The Death save button reads the result for you.
Is an online dice roller fair?
Yes. This roller uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same source used to make passwords and encryption keys, and discards any value that would favor one face over another. Every face of every die has exactly the same chance. Nothing is sent to a server, so the roller keeps working if your connection drops mid-session.
Frequently asked questions
What dice do you need for D&D?
A standard set has seven dice: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and a percentile d10 (d%) read together with a regular d10 to make a d100. Most players buy a second d20 for advantage rolls and extra d6s for spells like Fireball.
What does 2d6 mean in D&D?
Roll two six-sided dice and add them. The number before the d is how many dice, the number after it is the number of sides. 2d6+3 adds 3 to that total.
How do you roll with advantage in D&D 5e?
Roll two d20s and use the higher result. With disadvantage you use the lower one. Choose Advantage above the notation box, or type something like 1d20+5 adv. The roller rolls two d20s, shows both, and crosses out the one that doesn't count.
How do you roll stats for a D&D character?
The most common method is 4d6 drop lowest: roll four six-sided dice, ignore the lowest, add the rest, and repeat six times. Roll all six scores with the DnD Stat Roller.
What are hit dice in D&D?
Hit dice set how many hit points you gain each level and how much you can heal on a short rest. Each class has one: d6 for sorcerers and wizards, d8 for most classes, d10 for fighters, paladins and rangers, and d12 for barbarians.
What happens on a natural 20 or natural 1?
On an attack roll a natural 20 always hits and is a critical hit, so you roll the damage dice twice. A natural 1 always misses. On a death saving throw, a natural 20 restores 1 hit point and a natural 1 counts as two failures. Ability checks and saving throws don't automatically succeed or fail on a 20 or 1 unless your DM uses that house rule.
Is an online dice roller fair?
Yes. Every face of every die has exactly the same chance of coming up. See how the roller stays fair.
Can I use this dice roller for Pathfinder or other games?
Yes. Any game with polyhedral dice works, including Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Daggerheart and board games. The box accepts anything from 1d2 up to 100 dice with 1,000 sides.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The tray is built for one-handed use at the table, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
