Dungeons & Dragons isn't background decoration in Stranger Things — it's the lens the whole show looks through. The very first scene is a D&D session in Mike Wheeler's basement, the kids name the monsters after creatures from the Monster Manual, and the series closes the way it opened: around that same table.
So what class is everyone actually playing? Netflix answered that officially in its Season 5 cast guide. Below you'll find every canon class, the reasoning behind each one, our picks for the characters Netflix didn't assign — and a quiz to find out which party member you'd be.
Spoiler notice: this page discusses all five seasons. Finale details are hidden behind “Show spoiler” buttons.
Skip ahead: which party member are you?Netflix's Season 5 cast guide lists Mike as a paladin, Will as a cleric, Dustin as a bard, Lucas as a ranger, Eleven as a sorcerer and Max as a Zoomer. Erica plays Lady Applejack, and Eddie is the Dungeon Master.

The kids name every monster after something from D&D — but the show's versions are very different from the game's. Flip between them.
The faceless, petal-headed predator the kids name after a D&D figure in Season 1. It hunts by blood and moves between our world and the Upside Down.
A two-headed demon prince of the Abyss, driven by madness and one of the most powerful fiends in the game. Far beyond a level-3 party.
A vast spider-shaped shadow entity that controls the Upside Down's creatures and possesses people, named by Dustin after the D&D monster.
A tentacle-faced humanoid (illithid) with psionic powers that devours brains and enslaves minds. Humanoid-sized, not a sky-filling storm.
Henry Creel — once known as One — who became the Upside Down's mastermind, killing his victims through their memories. The kids name him after the D&D villain in Season 4.
A legendary lich who became a god of secrets, famous for the Eye and Hand of Vecna artifacts. One of the oldest villains in the game.

The show uses D&D logic as its storytelling engine: the kids name their enemies after monsters they already know, plan missions like a party plans a dungeon crawl, and understand the Upside Down through the game's rules. The Duffer brothers have said in interviews that they think of themselves as the show's Dungeon Masters.
The tie-in went both ways. Wizards of the Coast released a Stranger Things D&D Starter Set in 2019 (the “Hunt for the Thessalhydra” adventure, styled as Mike's own campaign) and a second box set, Welcome to the Hellfire Club, in October 2025 with pre-made characters for Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas and Erica.
Not directly — it's an original story, but D&D is woven through it. The kids play the game, name the monsters after D&D creatures (the Demogorgon, the Mind Flayer, Vecna), and use its logic to make sense of the Upside Down.
No. The finale ends with the friends playing one more game of D&D in Mike's basement, with Mike as Dungeon Master, which is why some viewers asked whether the whole story was a game. It's a bookend to the very first scene, not a “it was all a dream” twist.
Netflix lists Eleven as a sorcerer, because her powers are innate rather than learned. The 2019 Starter Set had her as a wizard, but the official class is now sorcerer.
It's a homebrew class the boys made up for Max in Season 2. It isn't in any official rulebook — think of it as a speed-focused rogue.
Mike runs the original campaign in Seasons 1–3. In Season 4, Eddie Munson is the Dungeon Master of the Hellfire Club.
Will the Wise is Will Byers' character. Netflix officially lists his class as cleric.
