Naming Your D&D Party

Every legendary adventuring party needs a name. From the Fellowship of the Ring to the Mighty Nein, party names create identity and camaraderie among players.

Why Party Names Matter

A good party name:

  • Creates group identity and cohesion
  • Gives NPCs something to call you
  • Can open doors (or close them) with factions
  • Makes for better storytelling
  • When to Choose a Name

    Session Zero

Some groups decide on a name before they even start playing, based on their characters' shared background.

    Organic Discovery

Many groups let the name emerge naturally from gameplay. An NPC might give them a nickname, or a memorable event inspires the name.

    Earned Through Play

The best party names often come from significant in-game moments.

    Naming Approaches

    The Descriptive Name

Based on a shared trait: "The Silver Swords," "The Wandering Five"

    The Event-Based Name

Named after a defining moment: "The Dragonslayers," "Heroes of Phandalin"

    The Ironic Name

Deliberately mismatched: A group of fearsome warriors calling themselves "The Afternoon Tea Society"

    The Mysterious Name

Names that raise questions: "The Twilight Watch," "The Nameless Ones"

    Famous D&D Party Names

  • Vox Machina
  • The Mighty Nein
  • Bells Hells
  • The Heroes of the Vale
  • Force Grey
  • Tips for Choosing Your Party Name

  • Make sure everyone in the group likes it
  • Consider how NPCs will react to hearing it
  • It should be easy to say and remember
  • Think about how it might evolve over the campaign
  • Don't stress too much - the best names often come naturally
  • A great party name becomes part of the campaign's legend, referenced by NPCs and remembered long after the campaign ends.
